April 2017 - ongoing My mother and father are turning 60 this year. When you turn 50 in the Netherlands it is a tradition to call the woman Sarah and the man Abraham on their birthday. This important day is celebrated with a life-size doll in the likeness of the birthday man or women placed in their own front lawn. These dolls are placed by relatives or friends and they are making sure the doll represents your age "properly" which means very old. When you turn 60 you are called Isaac or Elisabeth. This age is less celebrated, but maybe for some it feels even more of a milestone. My mother despises the age of 60. It is the image in her head of her own mother at age 60. At this age her mother had no energy left in her body, looked tired and was dressed like time has been standing still for decades. She was truly an old lady. My mother still feels young and energetic. As if she has not aged a day since she turned 50 and a Sarah doll was placed in her front lawn by her siblings. "I hope I am not comparable with my mother when she was 60", my mother said to me with a concerned voice.
